Mindful photography

Developing a focused mind through mindful photography

Mindful photography can open the door to the secret, hidden and amazing world of the unnoticeable by encouraging people to slow down, look again and connect with the natural world around us.

With smartphones and compact digital camera’s now being commonplace, it’s never been easier to give photography a go. By adding some mindfulness into the process you might start to see the world around you with a fresh perspective.

Here’s some inspiration to get you started:

Colour

Try a rainbow walk and capture all the colours in the rainbow. During summer we tend to only think of lush green tree leaves – but take a closer look and you’ll see nature has a breath-taking array of vibrant colours to discover.

Texture

Nature can offer many types of textures such as bark, a feather or lichen on a branch. Get up close! Notice every little detail.

Movement

Perhaps a trickier concept to capture in a still image but seek a bird in mid-flight, a honey bee collecting nectar, wildflowers swaying in the breeze or your best friend laughing. Look for the life around you, and capture those fleeting moments.

Mix it up

Before you head off set yourself a challenge to capture 5 different concepts. They can be anything you fancy but one set we like to use with the Westonbirt community programme is past, future, shape, colour and manmade.

There are no rules to abide by, you can shoot in colour or black and white, landscape or portrait, add filters or edit the photographs afterwards. You don’t need to be an expert photographer either, mindful photography isn’t about being good at it or not, it’s all about the process of seeing, exploring and experimenting.
