Tree of the Month - February 2018
What is tree of the month?
Rhododendron ririei
Why is it tree of the month?
Native to Sichuan province, China, Rhododendron ririei was introduced by Gloucestershire-born plant hunter Ernest Wilson, while he was collecting for the great Veitch Nursuries. We currently grow only a sole example of the species, though this plant is the UK Champion for both height and girth. An early flowerer, it is among the first of the genus to bloom, with a great many more (species and hybrids) to follow in a flowering season that extends right into summer. Never a dull moment!
Where can I find it?
Our plant is located on Circular Drive close to Savill Glade in the Old Arboretum (24.0131).
