Tree Champions: Long Jump

Posted: June 8, 2012 at 08:12 am Author: Westonbirt's learning and participation team

From 6 - 8 June, Westonbirt's learning and participation team will be hosting the Tree Champions family event. The event will include a trail around some of our own Olympic champions - our trees and shrubs - as well as some great Olympic-themed craft activities with a woody twist! Here, the team reveal some of the Tree Champion facts you can discover at Westonbirt…

Common oak

Acorns

Whilst trees themselves can’t travel from one place to the next, their seeds are dispersed by wind, water, or by the help of animals.

Research in Europe has shown that squirrels and wood mice will bury acorns up to 34m away from the parent tree, but jays have flown up to 4km (4,000m) away to bury them.

That’s a long jump for a seed to make!
